Do we need theatre?
\nThat is the question thousands of professionals disappointed in theatre and millions of people who are tired of it are asking themselves.
\nWhat do we need it for?
\nIn those years when the scene is so insignificant in comparison with the city squares and state lands, where the authentic tragedies of real life are being played.
\nWhat is it to us?
\nGold-plated galleries and balconies in the theatre halls, velvet armchairs, dirty stage wings, well-polished actors’ voices, – or vice versa, something that might look apparently different: black boxes, stained with mud and blood, with a bunch of rabid naked bodies inside.
\nWhat is it able to tell us?
\nEverything!<\/p>\n

Theatre can tell us everything.
\nHow the gods dwell in heaven, and how prisoners languish in forgotten caves underground, and how passion can elevate us, and how love can ruin, and how no-one needs a good person in this world, and how deception reigns, and how people live in apartments, while children wither in refugee camps, and how they all have to return back to the desert, and how day after day we are forced to part with our beloveds, – theatre can tell everything.
\nThe theatre has always been and it will remain forever.

And now, in those last fifty or seventy years, it is particularly necessary. Because if you take a look at all the public arts, you can immediately see that only theatre is giving us – a word from mouth to mouth, a glance from eye to eye, a gesture from hand to hand, and from body to body. It does not need any intermediary to work among human beings – it constitutes the most transparent side of light, it does not belong to either south, or north, or east, or west –\u00a0 oh no, it is the essence of light itself, shining from all four corners of the world, immediately recognizable by any person, whether hostile or friendly towards it.
\nAnd we need theatre that always remains different, we need theatre of many different kinds.<\/p>\n

Still, I think that among all possible forms and shapes of theatre its archaic forms will now prove to be mostly in demand. Theatre of ritual forms should not be artificially opposed to that of \u201ccivilized\u201d nations. Secular culture is now being more and more emasculated, so-called “cultural information” gradually replaces and pushes out simple entities, as well as our hope of eventually meeting them one day.
\nBut I can see it clearly now: theatre is opening its doors widely. Free admission for all and everybody.<\/p>\n

To hell with gadgets and computers – just go to the theatre, occupy whole rows in the stalls and in the galleries, listen to the word and look at living images! – it is theatre in front of you, do not neglect it and do not miss a chance to participate in it – perhaps the most precious chance we share in our vain and hurried lives.<\/p>\n

We need every kind of theatre.
\nThere is only one theatre which is surely not needed by anyone – I mean a theatre of political games, a theatre of a political “mousetraps”, a theatre of politicians, a futile theatre of politics. What we certainly do not need is a theatre of daily terror – whether individual or collective, what we do not need is the theatre of corpses and blood on the streets and squares, in the capitals or in the provinces, a phony theatre of clashes between religions or ethnic groups…<\/p>\n

Telle est la question que se pose des milliers de professionnels du th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u00e9\u00e7us, ainsi que des millions lass\u00e9s de celui-ci.
\nPourquoi en avons-nous besoin ?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

De nos jours, en comparaison avec les villes et les Etats o\u00f9 les trag\u00e9dies de la vie r\u00e9elle sont jou\u00e9es chaque jour, la sc\u00e8ne est devenue insignifiante.<\/p>\n

Qu\u2019est-ce que le th\u00e9\u00e2tre pour nous ?<\/p>\n

Les galeries et balcons plaqu\u00e9-or des salles, les fauteuils en velours, les voix bien polies des acteurs, ou au contraire, quelque chose de diff\u00e9rent: Des \u00ab black box \u00bb, remplies de boue et de sang avec un tas de corps nus enrag\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur.
\nQu\u2019est-il en mesure de nous dire ?<\/p>\n

Comment les dieux demeurent au paradis, la fa\u00e7on dont les prisonniers croupissent dans des grottes oubli\u00e9es sous terre, comment la passion peut nous pousser vers le haut, comment l\u2019amour peut d\u00e9truire, comment personne n’a besoin de quelqu’un bienveillant dans ce monde, comment r\u00e8gne la d\u00e9ception, comment certaines personnes habitent dans des appartements alors que des enfants se fanent dans des camps de r\u00e9fugier, comment doivent-ils tous retourner dans le d\u00e9sert, et comment, jour apr\u00e8s jour, nous sommes forc\u00e9s de se s\u00e9parer de nos bien-aim\u00e9s, – Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre peut tout nous dire.
\nLe th\u00e9\u00e2tre a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent et le restera \u00e9ternellement.<\/p>\n

Et depuis les 50 \u00e0 70 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, il est particuli\u00e8rement n\u00e9cessaire. En effet, si vous jetez un \u0153il parmi tous les arts publics, nous pouvons constater que seul le th\u00e9\u00e2tre nous transmet : un mot de bouche en bouche, un regard d’un \u0153il \u00e0 un autre, un geste de main en main, et de corps en corps.<\/p>\n

Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre n\u2019a pas besoin d\u2019interm\u00e9diaire pour travailler avec les \u00eatres humains. Il constitue la partie la plus transparente de la lumi\u00e8re, il n’appartient ni au sud, ni au nord, ni a l’est ou a l’ouest – oh non, il est l’essence m\u00eame de la lumi\u00e8re, brillant des quatre coins du monde, imm\u00e9diatement reconnaissable par toute personne, qu’elle soit hostile ou amicale envers lui.
\nEt nous avons besoin de th\u00e9\u00e2tre qui soit diff\u00e9rent, sous toutes les formes.<\/p>\n

Pourtant, je pense que, parmi toutes les formes de th\u00e9\u00e2tre possibles, ses formes archa\u00efques vont maintenant se r\u00e9v\u00e9ler la principale demande.<\/p>\n

Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre sous ses formes rituelles ne doit pas \u00eatre oppos\u00e9 artificiellement \u00e0 celle des nations \u00ab civilis\u00e9es \u00bb. La culture la\u00efque est maintenant de plus en plus \u00e9mascul\u00e9e, et ce que l’on appelle ” l’information culturelle \u00bb remplace et \u00e9vince progressivement les entit\u00e9s simples, ainsi que notre espoir de finalement les rencontrer un jour.
\nMais je vois plus clairement aujourd\u2019hui : Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre ouvre largement ses portes. Entr\u00e9e gratuite pour tous.<\/p>\n

Au diable les gadgets et les ordinateurs – Allez au th\u00e9\u00e2tre\u00a0! Occupez les rangs entiers des stands et galeries, \u00e9coutez et regardez les images vivantes ! \u2013 Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre est \u00e0 port\u00e9 de main, ne le n\u00e9gligez pas et ne manquez pas la chance d’y participer – peut-\u00eatre la chance la plus pr\u00e9cieuse que nous partageons dans nos vies vaines et press\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Nous avons besoin de toutes les formes de th\u00e9\u00e2tre.
\nSeule une forme de th\u00e9\u00e2tre n\u2019est surement pas n\u00e9cessaire pour tout le monde \u2013 Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre des jeux politiques, un th\u00e9\u00e2tre de \u201csourici\u00e8re\u201d politique, un th\u00e9\u00e2tre de politiciens, un th\u00e9\u00e2tre futile de politique. Ce que nous n\u2019avons certainement pas besoin est un th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la terreur quotidienne. – Que ce soit individuellement ou collectivement, ce dont nous n\u2019avons pas besoin est le th\u00e9\u00e2tre de cadavres et de sang dans les rues et sur les places publiques, dans les capitales ou dans les provinces, un th\u00e9\u00e2tre hypocrite d\u2019affrontements entre les religions o\u00f9 entre des groupes ethniques\u2026.<\/p>\n
